April 2026 Study #1
THE LAST SUPPER AND THE BETRAYAL
INTRODUCTION:
The Last Supper is one of the most significant events in the life of Jesus, as it marks the institution of the Lord’s Supper and the beginning of His journey to the cross. However, this sacred moment is also overshadowed by the betrayal of Judas, one of Jesus’ own disciples. As we study the Last Supper and the betrayal, we will explore the deep theological and personal implications of these events for our faith and our relationship with Christ.
OPEN IT:
Have you ever experienced a significant betrayal in your life, either by a close friend, family member, or someone you trusted? How did this experience impact you emotionally and spiritually, and what did you learn about forgiveness and grace through that process?
DIG INTO IT:
Read Luke 22:7-20, which describes the preparation and institution of the Lord’s Supper. What is the significance of Jesus’ words and actions in establishing this new covenant meal, and how does it relate to the Passover tradition?
In John 13:1-20, Jesus washes the disciples’ feet during the Last Supper. What does this act of humility and service teach us about Jesus’ character and His expectations for His followers?
Examine Matthew 26:20-25, where Jesus predicts His betrayal by one of the twelve. What is the disciples’ reaction to this revelation, and how does Jesus respond to Judas when he asks, “Is it I, Rabbi?”
According to John 13:21-30, Jesus identifies Judas as the betrayer and sends him out to do what he has planned. What does this passage reveal about Jesus’ knowledge and sovereignty over the events of His betrayal and crucifixion?
In Luke 22:21-23 and 31-34, Jesus also predicts Peter’s denial. How does Jesus’ interaction with Peter differ from His treatment of Judas, and what does this teach us about the nature of true repentance and restoration?
REFLECT ON IT:
The institution of the Lord’s Supper reminds us of the new covenant established through Jesus’ body and blood. How can you approach this time of remembrance with greater reverence, gratitude, and self-examination, allowing it to deepen your communion with Christ and His body?
Jesus’ washing of the disciples’ feet demonstrates the heart of humble service that should characterize His followers. In what practical ways can you embody this spirit of servanthood in your relationships with others, both within and outside the church?
Judas’ betrayal of Jesus is a sobering reminder of the potential for sin and deception even among those closest to Christ. How can you guard your heart against the temptations of greed, pride, or other sins that might lead you away from faithful devotion to Jesus?
Jesus’ sovereignty over the events of His betrayal and crucifixion reveals His complete submission to the Father’s will. How can you trust in God’s sovereign plan for your life, even in the face of suffering, betrayal, or injustice?
Peter’s denial and subsequent restoration illustrate the power of true repentance and the depth of Christ’s forgiveness. In what areas of your life do you need to seek God’s forgiveness and embrace His grace, allowing Him to restore and strengthen you for faithful service?
PRAY ABOUT IT:
Gracious Heavenly Father, as we reflect on the events of the Last Supper and the betrayal, we are humbled by Your Son’s sacrifice and the depth of His love for us. Thank You for establishing the new covenant through Jesus’ body and blood, and for inviting us to participate in this sacred meal. May we approach the Lord’s Supper with reverence, gratitude, and a sincere desire to commune with You and Your Son. Forgive us for the times when we have betrayed Jesus through our sins, and grant us the grace to guard our hearts against temptation and deception. Help us to trust in Your sovereign plan for our lives, even in the face of suffering or injustice, knowing that You are always working for our good and Your glory. When we stumble and fall, remind us of Your endless forgiveness and Your power to restore and strengthen us for faithful service. May our lives be characterized by the humble servanthood Jesus demonstrated, as we seek to love and serve others in His name. We pray this in the power of Your Holy Spirit, Amen.
