August 2025 Study #1

Mary Magdalene – John 20:1-18

OPEN IT

Describe a time when you witnessed something so amazing that you couldn't wait to tell others about it. How did people react to your news?

DIG INTO IT

Read John 20:1-18

  1. What did Mary Magdalene discover when she went to the tomb, and what was her initial reaction (v. 1-2)?

  2. How did Mary's actions differ from those of Peter and John after they left the tomb (v. 10-11)?

  3. What did Mary see when she looked into the tomb, and how did she respond to the angels' question (v. 11-13)?

  4. How did Mary initially fail to recognize Jesus, and what caused her to finally realize who He was (v. 14-16)?

  5. What important task did Jesus give to Mary (v. 17-18)?

REFLECT ON IT

  1. How does Mary Magdalene's devotion to Jesus challenge or inspire your own faith?

  2. In what ways can you relate to Mary's initial confusion and subsequent joy in this passage?

  3. How might Mary's role as the first witness to the resurrection encourage those who feel marginalized in their faith communities?

  4. What does this passage teach us about the importance of personal encounters with Jesus?

  5. How can Mary's example inspire us to share our experiences of Christ with others?

PRAY ABOUT IT

Thank God for the reality of the resurrection and the hope it brings. Ask for a deeper, more personal experience of Christ in your life. Pray for opportunities and courage to share your faith with others, as Mary did.
