ROOTED IN CHRIST
INTRODUCTION:
Every life is built on something. Some people build their lives on success, popularity, money, family, politics, pleasure, emotions, or personal achievement. Others build their lives on what culture approves or what circumstances seem to allow. But the Christian life must be built on Christ alone.
In Colossians 2:6–7, Paul reminds believers that the same way they received Christ Jesus as Lord, they are also to continue living in Him. The Christian life is not simply about beginning with Christ and then moving on to something else. It is about being rooted, built up, strengthened, and overflowing with thanksgiving in Him.
To be rooted in Christ means that He is not merely part of our lives. He is the foundation, source, strength, and center of our lives. A shallow faith may survive when life is easy, but only a Christ-rooted faith can stand firm when life becomes difficult.
OPEN IT:
What is something in life that people often depend on for stability, security, or identity? Why do those things eventually prove unreliable?
DIG INTO IT:
According to Colossians 2:6, what does it mean to receive Christ Jesus as Lord, and how should that affect the way we continue to live?
In Colossians 2:7, Paul uses the image of being “rooted” in Christ. What does this picture teach us about spiritual growth and stability?
What is the difference between a person who merely believes certain facts about Jesus and a person who is truly building his or her life on Jesus?
How can Christians be tempted to build their identity on culture, emotions, success, family, politics, or circumstances rather than on Christ?
Why does Paul connect being rooted and strengthened in Christ with “overflowing with thankfulness”?
REFLECT ON IT:
What are some signs that a believer may be spiritually shallow rather than deeply rooted in Christ?
When life becomes stressful, disappointing, or uncertain, what does your reaction usually reveal about where your roots are planted?
In what area of your life do you most need to remember that Christ is Lord?
How can a Christian grow from simply knowing about Christ to living daily in dependence on Christ?
What practical step can you take this week to become more firmly rooted in Christ?
PRAY ABOUT IT:
Dear Lord, we thank You for giving us salvation through Jesus Christ. Help us not only to begin our faith in Him, but to continue walking in Him every day. Forgive us for the times we have tried to build our lives on things that cannot truly hold us. Teach us to find our identity, security, strength, and direction in Christ alone. Root us deeply in Him so that we will not be shaken by the changing opinions of the world or the changing circumstances of life. Strengthen our faith, grow our gratitude, and help us live under the lordship of Jesus in every area of our lives. We ask this in His name, Amen.
