December 2023 Study #1
Small Group Bible Study: John 6:16-24
Open It:
Icebreaker Question: Can you share an experience when you felt fear suddenly turn to relief? How did that moment change your perspective?
Dig Into It:
In verses 16-17, the disciples set out across the sea without Jesus. What does this scenario suggest about acting in our own strength versus waiting for Jesus' guidance? How does this compare with other biblical instances, such as the Israelites moving ahead without God in Numbers 14:40-45?
The disciples are frightened when they see Jesus walking on the water (v. 19). How does this reaction reflect human tendencies in the face of the supernatural or unknown, similar to other reactions in the Bible, like in Luke 2:9-10 (shepherds at Jesus' birth)?
Jesus tells them, "It is I; don’t be afraid" (v. 20). How does this assurance speak to other biblical promises of God's presence in challenging situations, like Isaiah 41:10?
The passage notes that the boat immediately reached the shore where they were heading (v. 21). How does this miraculous aspect of the story relate to themes of divine intervention and guidance, as seen in Acts 8:39-40 (Philip's transport)?
The crowd's pursuit of Jesus the next day (v. 22-24) suggests a desire for more signs. How does this relentless seeking of signs compare with Jesus' teachings about faith, such as in Matthew 12:39?
Reflect On It:
How do you respond when you find yourself in situations where you’ve moved ahead without seeking Jesus' guidance?
Can you recall a time when fear was alleviated by recognizing Jesus’ presence in your life?
How does Jesus’ assurance, “It is I; don’t be afraid,” provide comfort in your current life challenges?
Have you experienced moments where you felt God’s immediate guidance or intervention, seemingly transporting you through a difficult situation?
How can we balance the human desire for signs with the need for genuine faith in our spiritual walk?
Pray About It:
Dear Lord, in the midst of life’s storms and uncertainties, remind us to seek Your presence and guidance. Help us to trust in Your assurances and not be overwhelmed by fear. Teach us to recognize Your work in our lives, not just in miraculous signs, but also in the quiet assurance of Your love and presence. Guide us to walk by faith, not merely in pursuit of wonders. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
