February 2024 Study #1

Small Group Bible Study: John 9:1-12

Open It:

Icebreaker Question: Have you ever had an experience that dramatically changed your perspective or understanding of something? How did it affect your life afterward?

Dig Into It:

  1. In verses 1-3, Jesus addresses the disciples' question about the cause of the man's blindness. How does Jesus' response shift the focus from blame to purpose, and how does this compare with other biblical perspectives on suffering, such as in 2 Corinthians 12:9?

  2. The concept of doing God’s work while it is day (v. 4) speaks to urgency and mission. How does this align with Jesus' broader mission and teachings, as seen in John 4:34?

  3. Jesus' method of healing the blind man (v. 6-7) is unique. What might be the significance of using mud and sending him to wash in the Pool of Siloam? How does this act reflect other instances of symbolic actions in Jesus' miracles, like in Mark 7:33-35?

  4. The neighbors and others who knew the formerly blind man are divided over his identity (v. 8-9). How does this division and disbelief reflect broader themes of recognition and acceptance of Jesus' works, as discussed in John 5:36-38?

  5. The healed man’s simple yet profound testimony in verse 11, “The man called Jesus made mud… I went and washed, and I received sight,” emphasizes personal experience. How does this testimony compare with the concept of personal witness in Acts 1:8?

Reflect On It:

  1. How do you view challenges or suffering in your life? Can you find purpose or God's work in these situations?

  2. What does “doing the works of God” look like in your life? How do you balance urgency with the need for reflection and rest?

  3. Have you ever experienced healing or transformation in an unexpected way? How did you respond?

  4. In what ways have you encountered disbelief or skepticism, either personally or in sharing your faith with others?

  5. How does your personal testimony of what Jesus has done in your life influence your witness to others?

Pray About It:

Dear Lord, thank You for the profound lessons we learn from the healing of the blind man. Help us to see our challenges as opportunities for Your work to be displayed in our lives. Give us the courage to do Your works with urgency and faithfulness. May our testimonies, like that of the healed man, be a powerful witness of Your grace and power. Guide us in understanding and sharing the transformative work You have done in our lives. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
