January 2024 Study #1
Small Group Bible Study: John 7:25-52
Open It:
Icebreaker Question: Have you ever been in a situation where public opinion was sharply divided about a significant issue? How did you navigate that environment to form your own opinion?
Dig Into It:
In verses 25-27, the people of Jerusalem are uncertain about Jesus' origins. How does this uncertainty reflect the struggle to understand Jesus’ identity, and how does it relate to other biblical moments of identity revelation, like in Matthew 16:13-17?
Jesus speaks about His relationship with the Father in verses 28-29. How does this discussion deepen our understanding of the Son's relationship with the Father, as outlined in other passages like John 10:30?
The attempt to arrest Jesus (v. 30, 44) but the inability to do so until His appointed time echoes what other biblical themes about God’s sovereignty and human actions, such as in Acts 4:27-28?
The officers' response to Jesus’ teaching (v. 46), “Never has a man spoken like this,” reflects what aspect of Jesus' ministry? How does this compare with the awe and astonishment in Mark 1:22?
In verses 50-52, Nicodemus suggests that Jesus should be heard before being judged. How does this appeal for justice align with other biblical principles of justice and righteousness, like in Deuteronomy 1:16-17?
Reflect On It:
How do you deal with uncertainty or confusion about spiritual truths or teachings, especially when opinions around you are divided?
How does understanding Jesus’ intimate relationship with the Father influence your relationship with Him?
Can you think of instances in your life where God’s timing and sovereignty became evident, especially in situations that seemed out of control?
Have you ever encountered a teaching or aspect of Jesus’ ministry that left you astonished or deeply moved? What was it about His words that impacted you?
How important is it for you to seek justice and righteousness in your judgments, both in personal situations and broader societal issues?
Pray About It:
Heavenly Father, as we navigate through a world of varied opinions and beliefs, grant us the discernment to recognize Your truth. Help us to understand and appreciate the profound relationship between Jesus and You, and to trust in Your sovereignty over our lives. May we be moved by the teachings of Jesus and seek justice and righteousness in all our dealings. Guide us to be fair and thoughtful in our judgments, always aligning our thoughts and actions with Your will. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
