July 2024 Study #1
Small Group Bible Study: John 17:1-26
Open It:
Icebreaker Question: Have you ever been part of a team or group where the sense of unity profoundly impacted the outcome? What was special about that unity?
Dig Into It:
Jesus begins His prayer by asking the Father to glorify Him so that He may glorify the Father, marking the completion of His work on earth (John 17:1-5). How does Jesus’ understanding of glory differ from worldly interpretations, and what does this teach us about the nature of divine glory?
Jesus prays for His disciples, emphasizing that they have kept God’s word and now know the truth that Jesus came from the Father (John 17:6-8). How does this acknowledgment affirm the role of discipleship in understanding and spreading God’s truth?
In His prayer, Jesus specifically asks for protection for His disciples from the evil one, highlighting their unity as they remain in the world (John 17:9-15). How does Jesus’ concern for their unity and protection inform our understanding of the challenges faced by believers in the world?
Jesus prays not just for His current disciples, but for all who will believe in Him through their message, that they may all be one (John 17:20-21). How does this prayer for unity across all believers extend the concept of community in Christianity?
Jesus concludes by expressing His desire that the love with which the Father has loved Him may be in His followers, and that He Himself may be in them (John 17:26). What implications does this have for how we live out our faith in relation to God’s love and presence in our lives?
Reflect On It:
How does Jesus’ prayer about glorifying the Father change your perspective on what it means to seek and give glory in your own life?
Reflect on your own journey of discipleship. How has keeping God’s Word led you to a deeper understanding and declaration of Jesus’ truth?
Considering Jesus’ emphasis on protection and unity, how can we foster a stronger sense of community and mutual support within our own church or faith group?
What are some practical ways we can work toward the unity among believers that Jesus prayed for? How can we contribute to making this a reality in our local and global Christian communities?
How does the idea that Jesus desires His love to be in us and to be present with us influence your daily walk and relationships with others?
Pray About It:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Jesus’ prayer, which so beautifully outlines His hopes for His disciples and all believers. Help us to embrace the glory that comes from fulfilling Your will, and to live in unity as Jesus prayed. Protect us from the evil one and strengthen our bonds within our community, that we might reflect Your love and truth to the world. May we always remember that Jesus is with us, and may His love fill and guide us each day. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
