June 2024 Study #1
Small Group Bible Study: John 15:18-27
Open It:
Icebreaker Question: Have you ever felt like you stood out or were singled out because of your beliefs or values? How did you handle being in such a position?
Dig Into It:
Jesus warns His disciples that the world will hate them because it hated Him first (John 15:18-19). How does understanding that believers are 'not of the world' help us make sense of opposition or rejection we might face?
In John 15:20-21, Jesus reminds the disciples to remember His words and experiences, noting that servants are not greater than their master. If Jesus faced persecution, His followers should expect the same. How does this perspective prepare us for the challenges of living out our faith authentically?
Jesus explains that people's hatred towards Him and His followers is rooted in ignorance of the Father (John 15:22-24). Considering Jesus performed works no one else did, why do you think His miracles increased accountability and condemnation for unbelief?
The coming of the Advocate, or the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus will send from the Father, is highlighted in John 15:26-27 as a source of strength and testimony about Jesus. How does the role of the Holy Spirit empower believers to bear witness in a hostile environment?
Reflect On It:
Reflect on a time when you felt opposition or rejection because of your faith. How did you reconcile your experience with the knowledge that Jesus went through similar, if not worse, opposition?
How does the promise that followers of Christ will face persecution impact your commitment to living openly and boldly for your faith?
Why is it significant that Jesus performed works that no one else had done before, and how does this increase the responsibility of those who witness or learn about these works?
In what ways have you experienced the Holy Spirit's role as Advocate in your life, especially when facing criticism or hostility because of your faith?
How can you better prepare yourself to bear witness to Christ in environments that are not receptive or even hostile to the gospel?
Pray About It:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the honesty and clarity with which Jesus has spoken to us about the challenges of following Him. Help us to stand firm in our faith, knowing that any opposition we face is a part of our identification with Him. Empower us by Your Spirit to be courageous and faithful witnesses, reflecting Your love and truth in all circumstances. Strengthen our hearts to remain steadfast, and use us to bring Your light into the dark places of this world. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
