ANGELS IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

INTRODUCTION:

The New Testament provides us with further insights into the role and ministry of angels, particularly in relation to the life and work of Jesus Christ and the early church. By examining these accounts, we can deepen our understanding of how angels continue to serve God’s purposes in the new covenant era.

OPEN IT:

Have you ever had an experience or encounter that you believe may have involved an angel, even if you didn’t realize it at the time? How did this experience impact your faith or your perception of God’s presence in your life?

DIG INTO IT:

1. How did angels minister to Jesus at key moments in His life, such as His birth (Luke 2:8-14), His temptation in the wilderness (Matthew 4:11), and His agony in the garden (Luke 22:43)?

2. What role did an angel play in the resurrection of Jesus and the announcement of this event to His followers (Matthew 28:1-7; John 20:11-13)?

3. How did angels facilitate the spread of the gospel and the growth of the early church, as seen in the stories of Philip (Acts 8:26) and Cornelius (Acts 10:1-8)?

4. In what ways did angels minister to the apostles and early believers, such as Peter (Acts 5:18-20; Acts 12:7-11) and Paul (Acts 27:23-24), during times of persecution or hardship?

5. What do the New Testament epistles teach us about the ongoing role of angels in the lives of believers and the church (Hebrews 1:14; 1 Corinthians 11:10; 1 Timothy 5:21)?

REFLECT ON IT:

1. How does the ministry of angels to Jesus throughout His life and ministry underscore His divine nature and the significance of His redemptive work?

2. In what ways can the examples of angels supporting the spread of the gospel and the growth of the early church inspire us to be more active in sharing our faith and participating in God’s mission?

3. How can the accounts of angels ministering to the apostles and early believers during times of persecution and hardship encourage us to persevere in faith, even in the face of adversity?

4. In light of the ongoing role of angels in the lives of believers, as taught in the New Testament epistles, how can we cultivate a greater awareness of and appreciation for their unseen ministry on our behalf?

5. How does the New Testament’s portrayal of angels as servants of God and ministers to His people reinforce our understanding of their subordinate role in relation to Christ and the centrality of His redemptive work?

PRAY ABOUT IT:

Gracious God, as we study the role of angels in the New Testament, we are in awe of how You have used these celestial beings to support the work of Christ and the growth of Your church. Thank You for the countless ways in which angels continue to serve Your purposes and minister to Your people. We pray this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
