March 2024 Study #1
Small Group Bible Study: John 11:1-27
Open It:
Icebreaker Question: Have you ever had to wait for something much longer than you expected, especially something critical or life-changing? How did you handle the wait, and what did you learn from the experience?
Dig Into It:
In verses 1-6, despite hearing of Lazarus' illness, Jesus waits two more days before beginning His journey to Bethany. How does this delay challenge our understanding of God's timing versus our own, and how does it relate to Isaiah 55:8-9?
Martha’s statement of faith in verse 22, “Even now I know that whatever You ask from God, God will give You,” reflects a profound belief in Jesus' power. How does this faith compare with other expressions of faith in the Gospels, such as the centurion in Matthew 8:5-10?
Jesus proclaims in verses 25-26, “I am the resurrection and the life.” How does this declaration deepen our understanding of who Jesus is and His mission, and how does it connect with 1 Corinthians 15:20-22?
Martha's confession in verse 27, recognizing Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, is a pivotal moment of faith. How does this acknowledgment mirror Peter’s confession in Matthew 16:16, and what does it reveal about recognizing Jesus’ identity?
The emotional responses throughout this passage, including Martha’s and Mary’s grief, highlight Jesus' personal care and connection with His followers. How does Jesus’ response to human suffering in this story reflect God’s compassion and empathy, as described in Psalm 34:18?
Reflect On It:
How do you reconcile feelings of disappointment or confusion when God's timing doesn't align with your expectations?
Can you share a time when your faith was tested, yet you chose to believe in God's goodness and power, even without seeing the immediate outcome?
What does Jesus being the "resurrection and the life" mean to you personally, especially in times of loss or despair?
How has your understanding of Jesus’ identity been confirmed through personal or biblical revelation?
Reflect on the significance of Jesus’ empathy towards human pain in your own experiences of suffering. How has this shaped your relationship with Him?
Pray About It:
Lord Jesus, we thank You for being our resurrection and life, offering us hope and restoration beyond our earthly trials and grief. Teach us to trust in Your perfect timing and to hold onto our faith, even when circumstances challenge our understanding. May we recognize You fully in our lives as the Christ, the Son of God, who cares deeply for our hurts and needs. Comfort us in times of sorrow, and strengthen our faith in Your power to bring life from death. In Your loving name, we pray. Amen.
