March 2025 Study #1
Small Group Bible Study: 2 Peter 1:1-11
Open It:
Have you ever undertaken a project or a pursuit where you had to build up your skills or knowledge step by step? What was the process like, and how did you feel about your progress?
Dig Into It:
Peter begins by affirming that faith is received through the righteousness of Jesus Christ and emphasizes the equal standing of all believers (2 Peter 1:1). How does recognizing our equal standing through Christ's righteousness impact our interactions and unity within the church?
He stresses the importance of God’s divine power giving us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us (2 Peter 1:3). What implications does this have for how we pursue spiritual growth and godliness?
Peter lists a progression of qualities to develop: faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and love (2 Peter 1:5-7). Why is it significant that these virtues build on one another, and how does each contribute to effective and productive faith?
He warns that those who do not possess these qualities are nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from past sins (2 Peter 1:9). How can maintaining an awareness of our cleansing from sin motivate us to cultivate these qualities?
Peter concludes by stating that practicing these qualities will prevent believers from falling and ensure a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom (2 Peter 1:10-11). What does this promise reveal about the relationship between our spiritual diligence and our future hope?
Reflect On It:
How does the knowledge that God has given us all we need for a godly life through Christ influence your daily spiritual disciplines or commitments?
Reflect on the list of virtues Peter describes. Which of these do you feel you excel in, and which do you find challenging? Why?
Consider a practical plan to strengthen a particular virtue you struggle with. What steps will you take, and how will you seek support from your Christian community?
How does remembering your cleansing from past sins influence your motivation to grow in faith and godliness?
Discuss how the assurance of an eternal kingdom impacts your perspective on spiritual growth and effort in the Christian life.
Pray About It:
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Christ. Help us to fully embrace Your divine power that enables us to live virtuously and effectively. Guide us in diligently adding to our faith all the qualities You desire, so that we may never be ineffective or unproductive in our knowledge of You. Keep us mindful of our cleansing from past sins, that we may strive towards spiritual maturity and receive a rich welcome into Your eternal kingdom. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
