March 2026 Study #1
JESUS AND THE MARGINALIZED
INTRODUCTION:
One of the most remarkable aspects of Jesus’ ministry was His compassion and care for those who were marginalized and rejected by society. Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus interacting with women, children, tax collectors, and sinners in ways that were counter-cultural and transformative. As we study these encounters, we will gain a deeper understanding of Jesus’ heart for the outcasts and the ways in which He challenges us to extend love, grace, and dignity to all people.
OPEN IT:
Have you ever felt marginalized or excluded, either by society or within a religious context? How did that experience impact your sense of worth and belonging, and what did you learn about the importance of compassion and inclusion?
DIG INTO IT:
Read Luke 7:36-50. What does Jesus’ interaction with the sinful woman at the Pharisee’s house teach us about His compassion for the repentant and His willingness to extend forgiveness and grace?
In John 4:1-42, Jesus engages in a life-changing con-versation with a Samaritan woman at the well. How does this encounter challenge social and religious barriers, and what does it reveal about Jesus’ heart for the spiritually thirsty and the outcast?
Examine Mark 10:13-16. Why do the disciples try to hinder the children from coming to Jesus, and what does Jesus’ response teach us about the value and importance of children in God’s Kingdom?
According to Luke 19:1-10, how does Jesus’ interaction with Zacchaeus the tax collector demonstrate His mission to seek and save the lost, even those despised by society?
In John 8:1-11, Jesus confronts the religious leaders who bring Him a woman caught in adultery. What does Jesus’ response to the woman and her accusers reveal about His mercy, His concern for justice, and His desire for restoration?
REFLECT ON IT:
Jesus’ encounters with the marginalized challenge us to examine our own attitudes and biases. In what ways might you need to grow in compassion and acceptance toward those who are different from you or who are considered outcasts by society?
The story of the Samaritan woman reminds us that Jesus breaks down barriers and offers living water to all who thirst for Him. How can you be more intentional about reaching out to those who are spiritually seeking, regardless of their background or social status?
Jesus’ welcoming of children into His presence underscores the value He places on the vulnerable and the seemingly insignificant. How can you cultivate a heart that welcomes and nurtures children, both in the church and in the broader community?
Zacchaeus’ transformative encounter with Jesus demonstrates the power of divine grace to change lives and restore the broken. In what areas of your life do you need to experience the transforming power of Jesus’ love and forgiveness?
Jesus’ response to the woman caught in adultery models a balance of grace and truth. How can you extend mercy and compassion to those caught in sin while also upholding the truth of God’s Word and the call to repentance?
PRAY ABOUT IT:
Gracious Lord, we thank You for the example of Jesus in His interactions with the marginalized and the outcast. His compassion, grace, and love for those rejected by society challenge us to examine our own hearts and to extend Your mercy to all people. Help us to see others through Your eyes, recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual created in Your image. Give us the courage to break down barriers and to reach out to those who are different from us, offering them the living water of Your love. Teach us to welcome and value children, remembering that Your Kingdom belongs to such as these. And when we encounter those caught in sin and brokenness, help us to extend Your grace and truth, pointing them to the transforming power of Your love. May our lives reflect the heart of Jesus for the marginalized, as we seek to be agents of Your compassion and reconciliation in the world. We pray this in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
