May 2024 Study #1
Small Group Bible Study: John 14:1-14
Open It:
Icebreaker Question: Have you ever felt reassured by a promise during a difficult time? How did that promise affect your outlook and actions during that period?
Dig Into It:
Jesus begins this passage by telling His disciples not to let their hearts be troubled and to believe in Him and God (John 14:1). How does this assurance address the uncertainties and fears they might be feeling, especially considering the context of His impending departure?
In responding to Thomas, who admits he does not know the way Jesus is going (John 14:5), Jesus declares, "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). How does this statement encapsulate the essence of Jesus' mission and the exclusivity of His role in salvation?
Philip's request to see the Father (John 14:8) leads Jesus to explain His unity with the Father, emphasizing that seeing Him is seeing the Father (John 14:9-11). What does this dialogue reveal about the disciples' understanding of Jesus' identity and His relationship with the Father?
Jesus promises that those who believe in Him will do the works He has been doing and even greater works because He is going to the Father (John 14:12). How does this promise expand the scope of the disciples' mission, and what implications does it have for their understanding of their own roles in Jesus' ministry?
The passage concludes with Jesus affirming the power of prayer in His name, ensuring that He will do whatever they ask in His name so that the Father may be glorified in the Son (John 14:13-14). How does this promise reinforce the disciples' connection to Jesus and the Father, and what does it teach us about the nature of prayer and its purpose?
Reflect On It:
How do Jesus' words in John 14:1 provide comfort or assurance in your own life, especially during times of trouble or uncertainty?
What does Jesus being "the way, the truth, and the life" mean to you personally, and how does it shape your understanding of following Him?
How do you perceive the unity between Jesus and the Father, and how does this understanding influence your relationship with God?
Considering the promise of doing greater works, how do you view your role in continuing Jesus' mission in the world today?
In what ways has prayer in Jesus' name been a powerful part of your spiritual life, and how do you see it as a means to glorify God?
Pray About It:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the comfort and assurance provided through Your Son, Jesus. Help us to grasp more deeply the profound truths that He is the way, the truth, and the life, and to live in a way that truly follows Him. Empower us by Your Spirit to do the works that Jesus did, and even greater works, as we seek to glorify You in all that we do. Teach us to rely on the power of prayer, trusting in Your promises to answer us and work through us for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
