THE ORIGIN AND NATURE OF ANGELS

INTRODUCTION:

Angels are celestial beings created by God to serve as His messengers and to carry out His will. Throughout the Bible, we see angels playing significant roles in God’s plan for humanity. In this study, we will explore the origin and nature of angels, examining what the Bible reveals about their creation, characteristics, and purpose.

OPEN IT:

When you think of angels, what images or descriptions come to mind? How do these compare to the biblical portrayal of angels?

DIG INTO IT:

1. What does the Bible tell us about the creation of angels (Psalm 148:2, 5; Colossians 1:16)?

2. How are angels described in terms of their nature and appearance (Psalm 104:4; Hebrews 1:14; Matthew 28:2-4)?

3. In what ways do angels serve and worship God (Psalm 103:20-21; Isaiah 6:1-3; Revelation 5:11-12)?

4. What roles do angels play in delivering God’s messages and carrying out His will (Luke 1:26-38; Acts 8:26; Acts 12:7-10)?

5. How does the Bible differentiate between the nature of angels and the nature of humans (Psalm 8:4-5; Hebrews 2:6-7)?

REFLECT ON IT:

1. How does understanding the origin and nature of angels impact your perspective on God’s power and sovereignty?

2. In what ways can the example of angels worshiping and serving God inspire and challenge us in our own worship and service?

3. How can we balance a healthy appreciation for the role of angels with the understanding that our focus should ultimately be on God Himself?

4. In what practical ways can we be more attentive and responsive to God’s messages and guidance, as delivered through His Word and His Spirit?

5. How does the biblical truth that angels are created beings, different from humans, help us maintain a proper theological understanding of the spiritual realm?

PRAY ABOUT IT:

Almighty God, as we study the origin and nature of angels, we marvel at Your power and wisdom in creating these celestial beings to serve You and carry out Your purposes. Help us to worship You with the same reverence and devotion that the angels demonstrate, and to be attentive to Your guidance and messages. May our understanding of angels inspire us to focus our hearts and minds on You, the Creator and Sustainer of all things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
