October 2026 Study #1
BATTLING WORRY
INTRODUCTION:
Worry is one of the most common battles of the heart. It can begin with something legitimate—a health concern, financial pressure, uncertainty about the future, a family problem, or a difficult decision—but quickly grow until it dominates our thoughts and drains our peace.
Jesus spoke directly about worry in Matthew 6:25–34. He reminded His followers that the Father knows what they need and cares for them more deeply than they often realize. Jesus did not deny that life contains real problems. Instead, He taught that worry cannot add anything useful to our lives and that our first priority should be seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness.
Paul gives similar instruction in Philippians 4:6–7. Rather than allowing anxiety to control us, we are instructed to bring everything to God in prayer, with thanksgiving. God’s peace then guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
The opposite of worry is not carelessness. Christians are still responsible to plan, work, prepare, and make wise decisions. The issue is whether we carry our concerns ourselves or entrust them to God. Worry tries to control what only God can control. Faith recognizes our limitations and rests in His wisdom, presence, and provision.
OPEN IT:
What kinds of situations tend to cause people the most worry, and why do you think uncertainty is so difficult for us?
DIG INTO IT:
In Matthew 6:25–30, what examples does Jesus use from creation to teach His followers about God’s care?
According to Matthew 6:27, what does Jesus say about the ability of worry to improve our circumstances?
What does Matthew 6:31–33 teach about the relationship between our priorities and our anxiety?
According to Philippians 4:6–7, what should believers do when they begin to feel anxious or overwhelmed?
Why do you think Paul connects prayer with thanksgiving when discussing anxiety?
REFLECT ON IT:
What situation are you most tempted to worry about right now?
How can you tell the difference between responsible concern and unhealthy worry?
When you become anxious, do you usually turn first to prayer, problem-solving, other people, or your own imagination?
What truth about God’s character do you most need to remember when the future feels uncertain?
What concern could you deliberately place into God’s hands this week?
PRAY ABOUT IT:
Dear Lord, You know every concern we carry and every uncertainty we face. Forgive us for the times we allow worry to take control of our thoughts and steal the peace You desire for us. Help us remember that You are our Father, that You know what we need, and that nothing about our lives is hidden from You. Teach us to bring our concerns to You in prayer instead of carrying them alone. Give us wisdom to do what is within our responsibility and faith to trust You with everything beyond our control. Guard our hearts and minds with Your peace, and help us seek Your kingdom first in every circumstance. We ask this in Jesus’ name, Amen.
